Wondering if anyone out there has had a similar problem as me with their state tax refund Posted on May 24, 201714 Comments

Wondering if anyone out there has had a similar problem as me with their state tax refund. In a nutshell, the AZ Dept. of Revenue “lost” both my overpayment from 2015 and a 2016 estimated payment I made in April of 2016 (have cancelled check to prove it). After many hours on the phone, the end result today is they are “opening a case” and it will take them 30 to 45 days to find out where THEY misapplied my 2015 overpayment and 2016 estimated payment.
So, while I did everything right, including putting my SS# on my check, and have indisputable proof, AZ is still holding onto my 2016 refund while they fix their mistake AND are billing me for taxes due plus penalty and interest (FYI, I should be getting a $1347 refund, not owe $2500 as they claim).
I am floored. Also angry and frustrated. This is ridiculous. The only good news is I verified the 2017 estimated tax payment I made is April is correctly credited to my account.
Grumble, grumble, grumble.

    1. You can call or go on line to check on status although it kept telling us there was no record and we did receive it.

  1. I had to fight SS for four years–FOUR YEARS!–to get my widow’s benefit. They kept telling me they didn’t have my paperwork which I submitted when I retired in 2005. Finally, in December, I sat in the local SS office with my paperwork and refused to go until I got to talk to someone. I told him all I wanted was to see the numbers. It took me an hour and a lot of his attempting to find WHY I’d been turned down. Finally he admitted SS was wrong and I got a FIVE FIGURE lump sum payment plus the monthly payments started in April. Yes–FOUR YEAR. Now I can buy new shoes and go to the dentist!

  2. It was! There’s a wall. How does one fight a burocracy (I can’t spell this and spell check thinks it’s spelled correctly)? They weren’t mean. They just trusted the guy that did the paperwork more than they trusted ME.

  3. I’m glad you finally got your money. It’s as if they think if only they can stonewall long enough, you (and others like you) will just shut up and go away.

  4. Yes, during all of this, I was treated as if I were trying to cheat the government. And I did almost give up. This was my final try.

  5. Happened to me about 8 years ago. Sent off my taxes and my payment, and thought I was done for the year. Then State of AZ sent me a bill for the taxes; with interest and penalties added of course. I was a little worried about that “opening a “case” myself but I got a notice from them in less than 30 days saying that everything was “resolved to their satisfaction” and I didn’t owe anything

  6. Jane that is just awful!! At the most difficult time in a person’s life the government has to make things more difficult. I’m glad it was resolved. But 4 years?????

  7. I had to get my stuff together each time and try again. And yes, it shouldn’t have taken so long. It should have kicked in when I applied.
