There is funny movie staring Robert Dinero and Anne Hathaway called “The Intern.” It is cute and easy to watch for those of us who have short attention spans and find it difficult to pay attention for very long. It is about an internet sales company hiring senior citizen interns.
Robert Dinero’s character applies for the internship and during the interview is asked by one of the young interviewers, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” Robert’s character looks at him and tilts his head and says, “You mean when I am 80?” The kid looks at him and realizes the irrelevance of the question to one who is burying most of his friends and they move on in the interview process.
If someone had asked me 10 years ago where I saw myself in ten years it would not be where I am today! Not as far as my location or what I do but how I do it! Ten years ago I was a prideful, thought I knew everything, I was very vain, I was a want to leave my mark on the world person. The things that were important to me were being right and being in charge and being perceived as the best at what I did. Now, none of that is bad per se but honestly, it isn’t that great either! How much more self centered can a person get?
Yesterday I had a new client that drove close to three hours one way to bring their horse for me to look at. The woman and her daughter were very nice and the horse was gentle and kind. It is the second new person from that area in the past month and I am amazed that they would drive by many other vets to come to us. What is it that would make a person drive so far for something that many others are qualified to look at? I am not the smartest person and by far not the most knowledgeable vet around.
When we finished the woman was very appreciative and as she loaded her horse and pulled out of the driveway I pondered over the why? Why drive so far? I determined that it was the kindness that I have been trying diligently to cultivate in myself and my life that gives me these opportunities. People are desperate for kindness! People want to feel like they matter and that you care about them as a person.
You see, with kindness there is no room for pride and it is pride that is often a repellent to those around us. Ten years ago my pride was great and while I have never claimed to know it all, I definitely had little patience and no real ability to be nice to the people I served. I just didn’t care about the people! I was all about me and the client and the animal didn’t really matter. I know that sounds odd but really, it was the truth. I wanted to be known for what I could do, not who I was as a person. I wanted to be the best for me not because it was what was best for the animals I worked on.
It is pride that makes us talk bad about others, it is pride that drives us to act like we know it all when we most often don’t, it is pride that puts off a feel that is often repulsive, it is pride that makes us argue a point that doesn’t really matter, it is pride that keeps us from the very thing that we want most, to be someone special, to be different, to be amazing! Kindness is the antithesis of pride!
No one really cares how much you know until they know how much you care. You can be the very best but if you are an asshole people will only tolerate it so long. I have been the asshole. I have been working in the area for 20 years and the only reason for people to come to see me now is because I am not who I was a few years ago! While I am still the same common sense, have to talk it out, don’t always have the answer vet, how I deliver that is much different! Who I am at my very core has changed! Kindness has done that and I am grateful for it!
I don’t want to be the best if the best doesn’t care about the people it serves! I don’t want to be the best if the best won’t help someone in need. I don’t want to be the best if I go home at the end of the day and worry about stuff that doesn’t matter! At the end of the day being the best is not near as important to me as being the kindest!
Do you want to leave your mark on the world? Do you want to be someone special? Do you want other people to talk about you? Do you want people to come from hours away just to see you? Bury your pride and put others first and treat the with kindness! The most amazing people in the world are the people who are the kindest! The most talked about and loved people are the ones who show kindness to all! Be kind, it is way more rewarding then being best!
