I’m often asked how I first got involved with Life Below Zero:
It was August of 2012. For some time I had been looking for an independent filmmaker to collaborate with on a documentary project I had in mind. While visiting with a friend in Fairbanks one night he handed me a small piece of paper with a name and email address written on it that another mutual friend of ours had told him I might want to contact regarding this. He said he didn’t know anything more about it. I sent an email not realizing that it was actually a reality TV show producer. Eight months latter, at my camp in the Brooks Range, I received a reply in the form of a message to my satellite phone and things progressed quickly from there. We talked daily for a couple of weeks. Then the executive producer of Life Below Zero flew out to my camp to meet me one day. I had never seen a reality TV show at that point so he brought along the first episode of LBZ, which was already in production, and I watched 10 minutes or so of it. I remember telling him “I can do this.” A month latter we were making TV!

  1. It’s been good to watch you in action. I like the show as a whole but your segments are my favourite. I like your lifestyle and the fact you can live a simple, happy life, even though it looks like hard work at times.

    1. He was in town enough to make a baby with someone – so it’s not a 100% simple, happy life in a cabin 60 miles from nearest road. Baby = complicated most, if not all, of the time.
